Unreal Engine goes VR!

I recently got into VR for a side project and I was planning to write a far longer post about it. But last night a neat little application got released I was waiting for: UEVR.

One of my major issues with VR always was the lack of AA or AAA titles. I tried getting into VR for gaming twice and it was always a disappointment. Especially games which clearly work in VR as there is a Playstation VR version but were never ported to PC. UEVR to the rescue.

It is a small injector that makes Unreal Engine 4 and 5 games work in VR. And it works really well! There are constantly more games tested and added to the compatibility spreadsheet as we speak. The Discord channel is active and hyped. And the guide on Notion to get started is not that bad.

I tested a few games in my Steam library and a few Indie games. Most of them worked exceptionally well. One had a few rendering issues that might be solvable by spending more than 10 seconds in the injector configuration. One worked till it received an input, then it black screened.

To set some expectations: For AAA games you need a beefy system from what I read. I only tested games on my i7 11700k, 128GB RAM, RTX 4090 with an Oculus Quest 3. Reports are 3080 series cards are fine for AAA games as well, 20 series seem to struggle but perform okay for older or less GPU intensive games.

Overall I am more than impressed. This injector is a feat worth celebrating and it is in my opinion the best thing that happened to VR gaming. Ever.
