You are not getting my money
The gaming industry is getting in a worse state by the month and on its forefront is Activision / Blizzard. Pay to win audio, blocking game preservation to sell remakes or that Overwatch 2 PvE was internally cancelled before the announcement and yet still presented as the reason why they had to make OW2 a new game. Surely not the desire to sell battle passes and have an even more predatory business model than loot box gambling.
But I do not want to single out AB. Just take a look at Nintendo suing emulator devs making their games playable in high refresh rate on hardware that is not outdated upon release. And ensuring you can enjoy your games after the platform is closed or the hardware not functional anymore. Don't get me wrong, some lawsuits were in my opinion justified and you could see them coming from miles away. But if you look at the patents they use for their claim it is getting absurd again.
There are many game releases this year I passed on for the sole reason that I cannot in good faith give the parent company my money considering their behaviour. I would have loved to play the last Zelda game. Finally able to play as female Link! (sorry, could not resist) Or the Warcraft I & II remaster, I loved both games when I first played them. Or simply enjoying a few more Overwatch sessions with friends.
I do not care if a gaming company tries to make as much money as possible as long as it is not in the disinterest of gamers or the gaming community. I am perfectly fine with Riot selling skins for $250-$500. I neither have to buy them nor do I have a disadvantage not owning them. Also I prefer to be killed by a good looking champion skin honourably losing midlane instead of having an unsupervised Brolaf roam mid...
Luckily there are still extremely good, enjoyable games out there. Baldurs Gate 3 is a great example. I am fairly certain they made good money with that game. Elden Ring. Despite my expectations and the studio not being a fan favourite I am enjoying Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Voting with my wallet feels pretty pointless to be honest. Neither AB nor Nintendo will notice the missing $50 per year. And I do not see gamers ever voting with their wallet en masse. Complaining? Absolutely. Acting? Rather not.
And I get it. There are basically no companies left that did not at some point do something sketchy (hey EA). Some are in my opinion absolutely worse than others. By a margin. And they will not see a cent from me. But I have to admit it is exhausting. And sometimes a bit annoying. But I rather deal with that kind of emotion than giving money to a company that might answer a QA question with "don't you have wallets?".
